What to pack for the Milford Track

A complete Milford Track packing list with essential gear, clothing tips and what not to bring for a safe and comfortable Great Walk experience.

Packing well for the Milford Track makes a real difference to your experience. All walkers must carry everything needed for the full four-day, three-night journey, so thoughtful packing is essential. One important thing to note is that the New Zealand Great Walk hut system means you don’t need camping gear. Your booking includes a bunk in each hut, along with access to gas cookers, running water, and even heating in shared areas.

While this lightens the load it's important to remember that Fiordland’s weather is famously changeable, with conditions shifting quickly from warm and sunny to wet and cold within the same day. The key is to pack light, stay dry, and be prepared for all conditions. This guide covers everything you need for a safe and comfortable journey on one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.

Milford Track Packing Essentials for Fiordland

There is a strict emphasis on self-sufficiency on the Milford Track, so every item in your pack needs to earn its place.

Your essentials should include:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers - high quality and breathable, suitable for Fiordland weather
  • Warm layers - fleece or merino wool
  • Lightweight hiking boots - make sure these are well broken in
  • Good quality pack - between 40–60L is recommended
  • Waterproof pack liner or a dry bag inside your pack - keep your sleeping bag and electronics here
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration system
  • Headlamp or small torch - the huts don't always have great lighting
  • Hiking poles - optional but recommended for the descent down Mackinnon Pass
  • Personal first aid kit - make sure it includes blister treatment, pain relief and strapping tape
  • Sunscreen - New Zealand sun is harsh, even on cloudy days
  • Insect repellent - the sandflies in Fiordland are no joke. DEET-based repellents work best

Clothing for the Milford Track

Layering is the most effective approach. The Milford Track has exposed alpine sections where conditions can change and deteriorate quickly. Even in the height of summer you should carry:

  • Base layers - Moisture-wicking thermal tops and leggings (merino recommended)
  • Mid layers - Fleece or insulated jacket for warmth
  • Outer layers - Waterproof jacket with hood and waterproof trousers
  • Extras - Warm hat and gloves (even in summer), lightweight sun hat and sunglasses

Avoid cotton where possible, as it holds moisture and dries slowly.

Footwear

Good footwear is critical. Many parts of the track are uneven and technical.

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
  • Wool or synthetic hiking socks (bring multiple pairs)

Make sure boots are fully broken in before arriving. Blisters are one of the most common issues on multi-day hikes.

Uneven terrain means good footwear is essential
Sleeping and Hut Gear

Accommodation on the Milford Track is in DOC huts, so you don’t need a tent.

You should bring:

  • Sleeping bag (lightweight, suitable for alpine conditions)
  • Sleeping bag liner (optional but recommended)

Food and Cooking

All huts on the Milford Track have cooking facilities including gas cookers but you will need to take your own utensils including, a pot, cuttlery and a plate or bow and all your food for the entire walk.

What to pack:

  • Lightweight cookware and utensils
  • High-energy, easy-to-cook meals. Dehydrated meals like Real Meals are the perfect source of energy on your walk
  • Snacks for walking days (nuts, bars, dried fruit)

Note: Always check current Department of Conservation guidelines for cooking facilities.

Personal Items

Don’t forget:

  • Toiletries (biodegradable soap recommended)
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Toilet paper in a sealed bag
  • Ziplock bags for rubbish (everything must be carried out)

What Not to Pack

To keep your pack light and practical, avoid:

  • Jeans or heavy cotton clothing
  • Unnecessary electronics
  • Heavy books
  • Multiple changes of clothing
  • Excess toiletries

Every gram matters on a multi-day hike.

Weather Considerations

Fiordland is known for its high rainfall, so waterproofing is essential year-round.

Even in summer, conditions can be wet and cool. Always expect rain and prepare accordingly.

Top Tips for Packing Well
  • Test your gear before you arrive
  • Keep weight under control (aim for 12–15kg max for main bag)
  • Pack for function, not variety
  • Prioritise waterproofing over style

The Milford Track is remote and weather exposed. Being well prepared means:
  • More comfort on long walking days
  • Reduced risk of injury or fatigue
  • A more enjoyable overall experience

Final Checklist

Before you leave, confirm you have:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm layers
  • Proper hiking boots
  • Sleeping bag
  • Food supplies
  • Transport and hut bookings confirmed
